Research on an electric vehicle of the Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika) at RWTH Aachen University

The Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika) at RWTH Aachen University researches various new components of electric cars with the support of the Hans Hermann Voss Foundation.

The rolling chassis of the vehicle developed so far offers a completely new driving experience when it comes to getting in the vehicle, seat position, vehicle steering, and maneuvering ability. The vehicle provides wheel-specific “steer by wire” steering with a side-stick controller and a very large steering angle. An innovative structural concept increases the safety of the vehicle. Excellent deformation behavior was achieved through material and structural changes. The project also dealt with the crash safety of battery systems.

In one last step, the rolling chassis got an outer shell. This is how it was introduced to a wide professional audience at the Aachen Colloquium 2015.
